State of the Art: Miami

For many Hispanics in the US, racial identity is more about culture than color. But if you have ever told family about someone you are dating and have been asked, “¿pero que es?” you know first-hand race matters. Ni Pardo, Ni Prieto: Presentations of skin color influencing Hispanic women’s self identity examines how body image and sexuality is subject to categorical differentiations within nuestra cultura mestiza.
Brazilian Adriana Carvalho’s solo exhibition is of mutated metal dress sculptures and other curious pieces made entirely of recycled materials, including a life-size homage to Frida Kahlo that depicts all of her physical and mental struggles.

Stroll along Ponce de Leon Boulevard and visit the myriad of galleries open late. If your night of elegance includes torturous heels, take the trolley or complimentary shuttles that run along Ponce from Merrick Park to Menores Avenue. Highlights include Ramón Vázquez’s Focus: A World of Fantasy at Cernuda Arte, the romantic landscapes and still life oil paintings at Jorge M. Sori Fine Art, and the usable objects made of sustainable materials at Design for a Living World: Nature Conservancy Exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum.
