This Latino Brand Designed Maria Becerra’s Argentina Dress

Argentine pop artist Maria Becerra stepped onto the Metlife stadium to perform the Argentinian National anthem during the World Cup final game on Sunday, July 19th. Along with her rendition of the Argentine hymn, Becerra pulled up in a custom dress inspired by the Argentinian flag.
The flowy dress was designed by Argentine designer Abel Cepeda. Cepeda was born and raised in Mendoza, Argentina, but has spent the last 20 years developing his avant-garde label, SEKS, alongside his partner Will Cowall in NYC. Cepeda shared the journey of designing the dress on his Instagram stories, where the designer is shown adjusting the dress’ blue chiffon on the mannequin.
In early July, Cepeda featured a similar version of the dress— potentially inspiring the same one Becerra wore on stage— as a shorter mini dress with similar draping and an embossed plastic bodice. The bodice included the number 10, a reference to the revered Argentine forward, Lionel Messi.
The flowing dress worn by Becerra was inspired by the colors and the details of the Argentina flag, including the use of soft-blue and white hues, and a gold-sculptural sun along Becerra’s waist, which references “El Sol de Mayo”— the sun emblem that appears in the center of the flag. The floor length dress included a fitted bodice, with a chiffon-like scarf that Becerra wrapped along her neck.
The SEKS label is known for its provocative aesthetic and handcrafted designs that have become celebrity favorites. The label has dressed artists including SZA, Kali Uchis, and Latto, creating custom ensembles that mix urban streetwear with each celebrities’ own unique style and form. Most recently, Seks designed Kali Uchis’ custom concert look for her latest tour “For the Girls,” which included a chic vaquera look replete with complex hardware details, a lacy and romantic blue mini-dress, and an expansive (and detachable) ball-gown layered with feathers and intricate embroidery.
On Instagram, Becerra shared her now-famous World Cup final look along a series of images that also included pictures of the national Argentine football team and everyone who joined her as she honored Argentina in their final match against Spain.
In Spanish, Becerra states “Days like this only come around a few times in life. Today’s words are only of gratitude.”
