Mattel has released a new Pre-hispanic Día de Muertos Barbie Doll ahead of the sacred festival of remembrance. The Barbie is designed by Mexican fashion designer, Kris Goyri, and incorporates the designer’s signature style of traditional Mexican mixed with modern elements.
The Barbie X Kris Goyri Día de Muertos Doll wears a white, balloon sleeved gown cinched at the waist with a colorful embroidered belt, inspired by Indigenous Nahua dress. The doll also wears a turquoise necklace and a crown of cempasuchil flowers atop her black, ankle-length hair. Goyri also hand-designed the doll’s distinctive black and white Catrina makeup, offering a subtle contrast to the pair of Signature 2024 Dia de Muertos Dolls that were released at the same time.
The special edition doll arrives in a cobalt blue and orange box with pots of cempasuchil flowers surrounding the doll. Mattel states that the packaging is inspired by the “Mictlán” from Nahua mythology, “which details the path a soul travels through time and space to cross into the world of the dead.”
Mattel has launched dolls for the holiday on an annual basis since 2020, with collaborations with designers such as Benito Santos in 2022 and Paola Wong of Pink Magnolia Mexico in 2023.

Consumers and collectors alike were fawning over the special edition doll, taking note of the designer’s attention to tradition and modern style.

While the Special Edition Barbie doll is currently sold out online here, the Signature Día de Muertos Barbie and Ken dolls are available for purchase on Mattel Creation’s website.
