The FDA is expected to grant emergency use authorization that would allow children as young as 12 access to a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. A spokeswoman for the FDA declined to comment on the timeline. The FDA authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for those 16 and older in December. Moderna is conducting similar trails of its vaccine for teenagers and is expecting results in the summer. [WaPo]
A subway overpass in Mexico City collapsed late Monday, killing at least 23 individuals. Roughly 70 people have been hospitalized as well, with seven in serious condition. The train had been traveling on an elevated section of the city’s rapid transit system known as the “Golden Line” before collapsing onto traffic below. [CNN]
In a reversal, President Joe Biden announced on Monday that he will allow 62,500 refugees to enter the U.S. throughout the next six months. This decision comes two weeks after President Biden faced backlash for announcing he would leave the Trump Administration’s limit of 15,000 refugees in place. Venezuela will begin clinical trials of Cuba’s vaccine candidate, Abdala, this month. Abdala was approved in Cuba in March. According to the Health Minister Carlos Alvarado, the country hopes to produce enough doses locally for the vaccination of roughly four million people by July and to have first results published by August. Puerto Rican boxer Félix Verdejo turned himself in on Sunday (May 2) after authorities identified the body of Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz, a woman that had previously been reporting missing. Ortiz, 27, had been pregnant with Verdejo’s child. Verdejo was charged with “kidnapping resulting in death, carjacking resulting in death and killing of an unborn child.” [NBC]
