Walkthrough with Elsa Almaraz – Vincent Price Art Museum

Behind every great man there’s a great woman. That rings true for photographer Carlos Almaraz who passed away from AIDS, leaving behind his wife Elsa Almaraz. Also an importance Chicana artist, Elsa experience the artistic evolution of a photographer that played a big role in the 1970s Chicano art movement. She will walk visitors through a special tour of the tribute show “Carlos Almaraz: A Life Recalled” at the Vincent Price Museum December 1st at 12:30. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear a different side of the memorable photographer’s work and career.

Group Show: About Face – ACME

Ay que cara! That might be something you yell out when at “About Face.” Dedicated to the idea of breaking through the traditional portrait, the 50-plus works by over 35 artists explore new ways to portray the human face or body. The talent roster makes for a diverse group from artists like Chilean Sandra Vásquez de la Horra to Canadian André Ethier. Get ready for some hints of Surrealism and German Expressionism – in other words, some awesomely weird art. Head to the opening reception December 1st at 6 p.m.

Group Show: California Photography Now – New Image Art Gallery

From cell phones to professional camera, there’s plenty of gadgets today that help us take photos of almost anything. Pulling together a variety of artists, “California Photography Now” presents Los Angeles through a variety of camera lenses, showcasing the personalities and places that make up the city’s diverse identity. Participants in the show include street artist Retna and renowned photographer Gregory Bojorquez. Stop by December 1 at 7 p.m. for the opening reception and bring your camera along, too – you never know what you might capture.
