Valley Vista: Art in the San Fernando Valley — Cal State Northridge
Most Angelenos view the Valley as its own world. Stereotypes like the “valley girl” don’t help much either. But this art show might give a different version of that well-known area. The art galleries at California State University Northridge will showcase works produced in the San Fernando Valley around the 1970s to the 1990s. The show will focus on what artistic contributions the Valley produced in relation to Los Angeles and within its own space. The show officially opens Monday, August 25 with an opening reception set for Saturday, September 6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. All of Los Angeles is really a melting pot for cultures and artistic styles so it should be interesting to see what the Valley offered over the course of these decades. You can check out the show Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Women and Print: A Contemporary View – Scripps College
In comparison to painting or drawing, few budding artists immediately choose to work with printmaking. While it’s more common to hear an artist name their primary medium as anything but printmaking, there are some seriously impressive works in the field that deserve attention. Scripps College will present more than 66 works by 26 women artists that create who are making some very interesting work today. The group includes Ellen Gallagher, Sophie Calle, Amy Ellingston, Ruby Osorio and more. The show officially opens on Saturday, August 30; an opening reception will take place on September 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. If you aren’t familiar with the unique quality of printmaking, this is a great way to expose yourself to some fantastic work.
