Ideas City streetFest at the New Museum
This Saturday stimulate your mental appetite by strolling down to the Bowery for Ideas City streetFest. This festival brings artists, thinkers, and performers together to test out their fresh ideas that reimagine how we interact with the world. The cosmopolitan nature of streetFest brings together people from all fields like architecture, the food industry, or sustainable living to host a day of activities. The activities include things like creating urban spaces with fun models in a setting guided by architects, or baking breads from different parts of the world with bakers. There will be performances and art installations as well, including a sculpture made from recycled electronics. Oh and of course, FOOD! Mexicue and Oaxaca Tacos will be there! The festival begins early at 11am and goes until 6pm. Events take place all around the Bowery and Sara D. Roosevelt Park.

Target First Saturdays at Brooklyn Museum
After getting inspired at Ideas City streetFest, head into Brooklyn for Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum. Admission to the exhibits is free and include Gravity and Grace, El Anatsui’s glittering waves of art made from appropriated and discarded materials reminiscent of the cultural exchange between his native country Ghana, the Americas and Europe. Ruby Latoya Frazier’s photography show documenting the degeneration of her industrial hometown Braddock, Pennsylvania is also on view, as well as John Singer Sargent’s expressive Watercolors. There will be music (including a live performance from soul musician Jesse Boykins III), theatre, film, and, as always, a beautiful crowd. The entertainment begins at 5pm and goes until 11pm.

There’s no excuse for shunning the arts in New York City. Day or night, NYC, is bubbling with creative activity, and not just in a gallery, museum or artspace. Whilst exploring the city, you can happen upon clever and pertinent street and public art. A public installation on the Highline projects Oscar Muñoz’s video Re/trato everyday from 8pm to 10pm on the east side of the Highline at West 22nd street. The video shows Muñoz painting a portrait on the concrete of a sidewalk that eventually evaporates. He then repaints the portrait, and the video is looped, repeating the endless construction of an image of identity. The Highline is constantly adding to their collection of outdoor, public art, so visit at night on a romantic stroll or during a moment of pensive solitude. Day or night, the Highline is a great place for engaging with the city and it’s artistic impulses.
