When author Jesús Escudero was asked who he would like to narrate his audiobook, La sombra de Miztlán (The Shadow of Miztlán), he shot for the stars. His request: actor Tenoch Huerta (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever).

Escudero said La sombra de Miztlán is inspired by the folklore of the culture of ancient Mexico. He describes it as an “Anahuacan fantasy” – a story set in pre-Columbian times that follows Centéotl, a man trained to fight the dark beasts of his world. Centéotl sets off on a quest with a winged serpent to rescue Princess Xúchitl from the clutches of a camazotz (bat demon) living in the kingdom of death known as Miztlán.

Escudero said that because the “Mexican literary world has excluded” his novel, he decided to publish it as an eBook at Amazon. The Mexican author then began to promote his work across social media and before he knew it, readers were downloading it so much, Audible, the popular online audiobook and podcast service, reached out to offer their services.

“[Audible] asked me who I would like to narrate [La sombra de Miztlán], and I proposed Tenoch,” Escudero told Remezcla. “So, they contacted him, showed him the idea and he very kindly agreed to narrate the novel.”

Huerta said he hopes he gets to narrate more of Escudero’s novels because he knows La sombra de Miztlán won’t be the last of the series. And let’s not pretend that Huerta wouldn’t make the perfect Centéotl if the novel was ever adapted into a feature film.
