Canelo Álvarez may have lost his big fight Saturday night (May 7), but that didn’t mean the Mexican boxer wasn’t ready to celebrate … how well he can take a loss, maybe?
After his defeat at the hands of Russian Dmitry Bivol, Álvarez decided not to hang his head low. Instead, he went out for a night of karaoke in Las Vegas with his wife, Fernanda Gómez, actor Diego Boneta, and his girlfriend Renata Notni.
In a video captured by Gómez, Álvarez and Boneta entertained onlookers with a rendition of Luis Miguel’s song “La Media Vuelta.” Boneta played Miguel for three seasons on Netflix’s Luis Miguel: The Series.
That same evening, Gómez shared a supportive message to her husband after only the second loss of his career and his first since 2013 when he lost to undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“So proud of you, of the risks you take to get out of your comfort zone, you are a champion in every sense of the word, we will come back stronger than ever. I love you my world champ!” Gómez wrote on Instagram. “I am proud of you today more than ever.”
She added: “Only those who are standing fall, those who have never fallen is because they have probably crawled all their lives.”
To fight Bivol, Álvarez went up in weight class to 175 lbs., a move many in the boxing world thought was risky. Álvarez, however, didn’t make any excuses when the decision was announced.
“It was my turn to lose today,” Álvarez said in the ring after the fight. “I didn’t do enough to win.” Later during the press conference, however, he said, “I definitely didn’t lose the fight. I think I got a little bit tired toward the final rounds, but I felt good.”
Canelo Álvarez’s next opponent is still unknown, but most people want him to either finish his trilogy against Gennadiy Golovkin later this year or rematch Bivol.
