INTERVIEW: ‘Bridgerton’ Stars Nicola Coughlan & Luke Newton on That Pitbull Surprise in Season 3

Netflix

With Bridgerton fans returning to the ton, Remezcla spoke with Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton about season 3 and that Pitbull surprise during such a pivotal Polin moment.

Last we left off, Penelope Featherington (Coughlan) heard Colin Bridgerton (Newton) say some truly devastating things that made it clear he would never see her as anything more than a friend. Now, in season 3, Penelope is standing on her own and looking to find a husband no matter what anyone thinks or what doubts her friends have, especially Eloise, after the Lady Whistledown reveal in season 2.

One of the most surprising moments of season 3 part 1, as season 3 will be divided into two parts, is the first intimate moment that Penelope and Colin share. It comes as they’re finally realizing the feelings and the tension brewing between them explodes in the carriage scene in episode 4. And for those obsessed with the orchestral versions of hits that Bridgerton is known for, the song playing in the background sounds a little familiar. A little too familiar.

An instrumental cover of Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack, and Nayer can be heard playing as Polin comes together. And when we asked Nicola and Luke about it, they were just like us; surprised and kind of delighted by it. Nicola, in particular, burst into incredulous laughter, shaking her head because if there was anyone who didn’t expect it, it was her. Couglan said, “It was a surprise!” She then scrunched up her face, acting like she was listening intently to the cover in real time before asking, “Is that Pitbull?”

Newton was right alongside her in his surprise and said, “We spent a lot of time in the makeup trailer playing through different tracks. But [Pitbull], that’s something that…that’s one we couldn’t anticipate.” Coughlan agreed, trying to hold back her laughter again and failing before adding, “Not in a million years.”

In the spirit of instrumental covers, we also asked Coughlan and Newton what songs they’d like to see covered in Bridgerton for upcoming seasons. Newton didn’t hesitate before answering, “I listened to a song the other day, “A Thousand Years.” And I thought it was like really romantic.” The song “A Thousand Years” is a Christina Perri song written for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.

Once again, Coughlan couldn’t contain herself and started giggling as Newton continued, “I think it’s originally from Twilight, is it?” She assured him it was. “I thought this could be in the show and I convinced myself that it already had been. And I had to look back at the playlist [for Bridgerton] and I don’t think it is.”

Coughlan also had thoughts on what instrumental version of a song she’d like to see in season 3 and beyond. “There’s a really beautiful version of Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” that I really really love.” Unfortunately, this interviewer was so dazed at the wonderful opportunity that I forgot to ask for which specific version of “Take Me to Church.” But the Hozier love is clear from Coughlan.

Altogether, music continues to be an important part of storytelling when it comes to Bridgerton. And hopefully, the inclusion of Pitbull in season 3 of Netflix’s Bridgerton is a sign of the show looking to include more Latine musical acts. Because our people are at the top of the music charts and anytime that Bridgerton makes a return to our screens, our feeds are flooded with local musicians or artists doing instrumental versions of Karol G or Bad Bunny. Until then, we’re going to go back and watch this Polin scene over and over again.
