Jennifer Lopez is the queen of rom-coms. We knew that before her latest, Office Romance, where she teams up with Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein. But other iconic things by JLo seem to be coming back into fashion these days, like one particular dress and even one of her older songs. You can thank Prime Video hit Off Campus for that.
Remezcla Trending Editor Lyra Hale sat down with Lopez and Goldstein to discuss Office Romance, filming in the Dominican Republic, and yes, that viral Off Campus moment.
“I was talking about this last night with someone,” Lopez shared. “I was just like, I can’t believe the green dress has become what the green dress has become. And I can’t believe that “On the Floor” is back on the charts. The whole thing really was hitting me last night.”
And she means that in a good way. “It’s incredible. And it’s funny how the music business has changed in that way, where you can have a song that was a huge hit, you know, 15 years ago in 2011, and also be a hit today. That’s insane to me. That never happened before social media, before viral moments, before streaming and all of that. So, there are new and exciting opportunities for all artists.”
In case you somehow missed it, the reason “On the Floor” is back on the charts and we’re all thinking about the green dress for Halloween is due to a viral moment during the Prime Video series Off Campus. During the moment, actress Mika Abdalla (who plays the character Allie) wears a replica of JLo’s iconic green Versace Grammys dress to a Halloween party. Her love interest, Dean (played by Stephen Kalyn), then requests the DJ change the track to “On the Floor.” Talk about knowing their music history!
JLo’s newest movie, Office Romance, was also a chance for the actress to reunite with Edward James Olmos, who once again plays her on-screen dad. “I was really thinking about, who do we want to play my dad? And we knew that the role itself was a big role in the scope of you’re always talking about him, but it was a smaller role in how many days he worked and stuff like that. But we were so lucky to get him, because he and I do have a really natural chemistry as father and daughter.”
The duo famously played father and daughter in Selena. “We carry that from years and years. And we even did, before Selena, we did Mi Familia together, where he played… It’s funny, he played my son in Mi Familia. And then he played my father, because I played the young mother in Mi Familia. And so, we have this great history together. And I remember him mentoring me during Selena when I was a young actress, and then him coming into this and feeling the same. He just takes over the room.”
Office Romance was also filmed in the Dominican Republic. And Goldstein, Lopez’s co-star, fell in love with the place. “I loved the Dominican Republic. I really, really loved it. And I would like to live there.”
To the point that it gave them ideas. JLo said, “Yeah, he loved it. I remember when we were there, he was like, we need to come back and film something else.” Hey, maybe a sequel!
