THE BIGGER PICTURE

The World Cup winner was all smiles when being paraded on the pitch prior to a meeting with Lanus. He donned a River shirt and waved to the crowd before taking up a seat in the stands. However, the supporters then broke out into the chant that attracted widespread criticism during Argentina’s Copa celebrations.

The 23-year-old’s Stamford Bridge team-mate, Wesley Fofana, is among those to have spoken out against an act of “uninhibited racism”, while others have unfollowed the South American on social media.
