While ABC recently canceled the opulent reboot of Gran Hotel after just one season, they’re preparing to heavily invest in Latinx programming. Last summer, the company announced the Christina Vidal-starring sitcom United We Fall and the Victor Rasuk-led romantic series The Baker and the Beauty.

While United We Fall still doesn’t have a premiere date, the latter show looks to have a prime midseason air date. Based on an Israeli show, The Baker and the Beauty follows Daniel Garcia (Rasuk), who works at his father’s Cuban bakery. When he falls into a whirlwind romance with “international superstar and fashion mogul” Noa Hollander (Peruvian-Argentine actress Nathalie Kelley), Daniel’s life completely changes.

The Baker and the Beauty will also star Carlos Gomez, David Del Rio, Belissa Escobedo, and Lisa Vidal. (Yep, sisters Christina and Lisa Vidal will have shows on the same network!)

The Notting Hill-esque series sounds utterly charming and is just one of several different genres ABC is putting Latinx leads in. Recently, the network announced two shows in development: a Latino-starring reboot of the series Revenge and a series based on Mexican-American chef Aaron Sanchez’s memoir.

The Baker and the Beauty has a completely adorable premise and it’ll be great to see the Raising Victor Vargas star leading a series like this. Giving this an early April slot in the prime-time area, it looks like ABC has confidence in the series’ legs. While both it and Grand Hotel had 10 p.m. time slots, the latter series debuted two months into summer TV season, whereas The Baker and the Beauty looks to be getting Spring Break crowds. With networks being a bit more unwilling to let a show continue without good ratings fingers are crossed this series gets the chance to develop an audience properly.

The Baker and the Beauty premieres April 6, 2020, at 10 p.m. on ABC.
