The Internet Movie Database (IMDb.com) released its list of Top Stars of 2020 this week and two Latina actresses were featured in the Top 10. According to IMDb.com, the list is based on the “10 stars who consistently ranked highest on the IMDbPro STARmeter chart throughout 2020.”

Topping the list at No. 1 was Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas, who had her big breakout last year when she starred in the lead role of the critically acclaimed mystery Knives Out. De Armas picked up a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Marta Cabrera, a live-in nurse for a wealthy novelist, who is caught up in a crime investigation when her boss is found murdered.

While the enthusiasm for Knives Out surely carried over to 2020, de Armas’ top ranking wasn’t hurt by the fact that she will be starring as a CIA agent in the next James Bond movie, No Time to Die, scheduled for release on April 2, 2021. She will also portray actress and screen icon Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming film Blonde.

It’s no surprise why Argentine-British actress Anya Taylor-Joy landed at No. 8 on IMDb.com’s list. While Taylor-Joy made waves with past films like The Witch, Split and the 2020 version of Jane Austen’s Emma, it was her role as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit that made her stock rise so high this year. According to Netflix, in its first month streaming, The Queen’s Gambit became its “biggest scripted limited series to date” with a record-setting 62 million households tuning in to watch Taylor-Joy checkmate everyone.

Next year, Taylor-Joy will be seen in Edgar Wright’s (Baby Driver) psychological horror film Last Night in Soho where she plays a fashion designer who time travels to the 1960s.
