Milly Alcock’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was written a Latina. Based off the comic mini-series of the same name written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely with coloring by Matheus Lopes, it tells the story of Kara Zor-El, Krypto, and a young girl on a galactic revenge quest. And for James Gunn’s DC adaptation, they brought on Ana Nogueira to write the script.
The Brazilian-American playwright and actress was brought on in 2023 to take on the DC standalone feature that would follow after David Corenswet’s Superman. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, this is the second time that Nogueira has written a Supergirl movie.
In DC’s The Flash, a version of Supergirl made an appearance, played by Sasha Calle. The Colombian-American actress was the first Latina Supergirl in DC history. And Nogueira was brought on to write a script meant to be a spin-off. Unfortunately, that didn’t movie didn’t happen.
Back in 2023, Gunn welcomed Nogueira to the team on Instagram and described her as “an amazing writer whose screenplay adaption of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be.”
As we reported back in 2023, Nogueira was born in Philadelphia, Nogueira has worked as an actor on several TV series, including The Vampire Diaries, The Michael J. Fox Show, and Hightown. She also had an off-Broadway play in 2022 titled Which Way to the Stage.
On the podcast An Actor Despairs, Nogueira spoke with host Ryan Perez about the support she received from her Brazilian father and American mother and how the two cultures molded her into who she is today.
“Culture and coming from those two different corners of the world probably was very influential,” she said before recounting how her parents started her on this career path when they recorded the PBS Great Performances production of Into the Woods and let her watch it because they thought she’d enjoy it. “I remember I would build forts in the TV room so that I could spend the whole day napping or just like playing in front of Into the Woods.”
