HBO Max’s latest project is a film about friendship and the all-too-common perils of being a teen. But, fundamentally, Unpregnant uses humor and all of the aforementioned to touch on the hoops some folks have to go through for abortion care in the United States.

In Unpregnant, a pregnant 17-year old high schooler named Veronica, played by Haley Lu Richardson (Five Feet Apart), embarks on a 1,000-mile road trip to get what she refers to as “the procedure.” With no one else to lean on—boyfriend’s out of the loop, parents won’t be thrilled, and her quote-on-quote best friend just isn’t par for the course—Veronica taps on her ultimately reliable and undeserved ex-best friend Bailey, played by Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria), for help.

The road to New Mexico is filled with snacks, laughs, tears and a healthy dose of drama.

The film, set to stream on Sept. 10, is an adaptation of Jenni Hendriks’ book, released earlier this year.
