The life of the best footballer to ever play the game in Brazil is in development. The biopic is set to tell the story of Marta Vieira da Silva, simply known as Marta, and her rise from a young player fighting to play the game she loved to one of the best players the game has ever seen.

A six-time FIFA World Player of the Year, Marta is widely regarded as one of the best players to ever play fútbol and one of the players who brought the women’s game to the bigger stage. But for Marta, it’s not just about what she managed to do on the field, but about how she became a symbol for a generation of girls looking for a place in a game that, for so long, was only for boys in Brazil—and in the world at large.

The biopic is set to star Brazilian actress Alice Carvalho, who has appeared in The Secret Agent and the series Cangaço Novo. The Secret Agent notably has just been nominated for Best Motion Picture in the Drama category and Non-English Language category. And Andrucha Waddington is attached as director. He was the director of Vini Jr., a documentary about the Brazilian icon’s journey to becoming a global fútbol star.

At the moment of publication there is no more information available about the upcoming biopic or about Marta’s possible participation.

With several projects, be it movies or docuseries, about a great number of male sports—and specifically fútbol–stars, it feels fitting to give Marta her time in the spotlight and showcase the growth of women’s sports, even if there’s still so much to do.
