Actress Camila Mendes is teaming up with popular Brazilian-Italian-American YouTuber Rudy Mancuso on Amazon Studios’ upcoming romantic comedy Música. Mendes will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
According to Deadline, production on the new film is set to start this summer. The narrative follows a young man (Mancuso) in Newark, New Jersey, who is “plagued by the music in his head” and must “come to terms with an uncertain future with balancing love, family and Brazilian culture.” Along with starring in the lead role, Mancuso also co-wrote the script and will compose the score and soundtrack.
“I’m beyond excited to have the wildly gifted mind of Camila join this special journey of Música where we’re telling an authentic Brazilian-American story through the eyes of a synesthete,” Mancuso told Deadline.
Co-producer Mary Viola added that she is thrilled to be working with Mendes, who is Brazilian-American and best known for her role in the CW series Riverdale, which was recently renewed for a seventh season. “Not only is she one of the most talented actresses of her generation, she also brings an authenticity to the project with her cultural knowledge of Brazil,” Viola said.
Up next for Mendes is the Netflix original film Strangers with Maya Hawke about two young women who go after each other’s bully. It’s an obvious nod to the 1951 Alfred Hitchcock film Strangers on a Train about two men who meet on a train and decide that they will commit the other person’s murder, so neither will get caught.
