Grab your guitar and a big box of tissues. In celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary, the studio is opening the vault to re-releasing seven of its animated films and one live-action movie back into theaters for a short time. One of those films is the Academy Award-winning 2017 feature, Coco.
Coco will return to theaters September 15-28, 2023. There’s no news on whether any of these screenings will include the Spanish-language version of the film. And tickets can be bought on Fandango.
The other Disney films returning to theaters before the end of the year are Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (July 7-20); Toy Story (July 21-August 3); Frozen (August 4-17); Beauty and the Beast (August 18-31); The Incredibles (September 1-14); The Lion King (September 29-October 12); and Moana (October 13–26).
Set in the Mexican town of Santa Cecilia, Coco tells the story of Miguel Rivera (Anthony Gonzalez), a 12-year-old aspiring musician who must find a way back home when he accidentally travels to the Land of the Dead. Along with Gonzalez, the film starred Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, and Ana Ofelia Murguía as the titular family matriarch, Mama Coco.
During its initial release five years ago, Remezcla called it a “beautiful, heartwarming, and visually exceptional achievement” and said the film would “become the standard-bearer of a positive example of what the Latino experience can look like on the big screen for years to come.” It earned $814 million at the worldwide box office, making it the seventh most profitable Disney-Pixar film ever.
Earlier this year, Disney announced that it would adapt Coco for the Broadway stage.
