Emmanuel Lubezki’s Instagram Shots of ‘The Revenant’ are Reason Enough for Another Oscar Win

Anyone who’s universally hailed as one of the greatest living cinematographers probably has a pretty dope Instagram feed. And that’s precisely the case for Mexican master Emmanuel “El Chivo” Lubezki, who has been showing his still side on the photo sharing platform for a couple of years now, swapping out his trademark dizzying camera movements for sensitive studies in light, texture, and the human face.

Unsurprisingly, the photos are impeccable, and anyone who wasn’t already consecrated as one of the most illustrious eyes of a generation would likely opt to get some of these shots into a gallery before posting them online. But El Chivo is probably happy enough with his back-to-back Oscar wins that he could cut out the middle man and bring his work straight to the people.

Now, with a lot of buzz about an unprecedented third consecutive Oscar for The Revenant – his latest collab with Mexico’s Hollywood auteur, Alejandro González Iñárritu – El Chivo has been using his feed to give us a stunning behind-the-scenes glimpse at the production. Alternating between awe-inspiring landscapes and delicate portraits of the cast, El Chivo’s Instafeed gives us a pretty clear idea how the combination of an extraordinary location, solid make up and wardrobe, and a one-in-a-million eye for framing and light could be the recipe needed for El Chivo to take home that hat-trick.

Either way, the Library of Congress should probably find someway to archive this feed. Take a minute to behold, and accept that maybe your artsy selfies aren’t really all that.
