The third season of La Reina del Sur, the Spanish-language telenovela based on the novel of the same name by Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte, will be back on the small screen in only a couple of months.

On Monday (August 8), Telemundo announced the new season would debut in October 2022, three years after the second season ended. Fans of the show shouldn’t be too surprised at the long wait between seasons. It took eight years for the second season to premiere after the first season debuted in 2011.

The series follows the rise of Teresa Mendoza (Kate del Castillo), a Mexican woman who becomes one of the most powerful drug lords in Spain.

“Kate del Castillo continues to be the heart of this series and now this epic saga continues full of action, suspense and adventure, revealing the new purpose of Teresa Mendoza, such an iconic character for our audience,” Karen Barroeta, EVP of Production & Development at Telemundo Global Studios, said in a statement. “We are sure that the third season of this super production will mark a new milestone in Hispanic television in the U.S.”

In an Instagram post, del Castillo reminded fans that “1,493 days have passed since we haven’t seen Teresa, but in October the wait ends. ‘La Reina Del Sur’ returns to Telemundo with a season that will give a lot to talk about.”

In an interview with Hola!, del Castillo said that she can’t wait to revisit her character after being away from her for so long. “Teresa is a warrior, she comes with everything you can imagine,” she said. “She comes back much stronger than ever. She is on another level! People are going to be very happy and satisfied with this season, more than any other.”

La Reina del Sur was remade in 2016 as Queen of the South for U.S. audiences. It starred Alice Braga in the lead role. The English-language series wrapped its fifth and final season last year.
