The Latina Queens on ‘Drag Race’ Season 17 Proudly Represented Their Roots in Season Premiere

The Latina queens shined on the season premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17, which happned last night January 3). Arrietty, Jewels Sparkles, and Lucky Starzzz represented their Latina roots and were among the standout performances of the talent show.
Season 17 of RuPaul’s Drag Race started with a bang with a parody of the hit Netflix series Squid Game. The 14 new contestants survived a game of Red Light, Green Light in the “Squirrel Games.” Half of the cast then participated in the “Drag Queens Got Talent” show.
Jewels Sparkles, who is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, tore up the stage with her performance of “Dame Más Leche.” She revealed during the episode that she has a bionic spine that didn’t hold her back from dancing up a storm. Jewels Sparkles placed in the top two this week with her Spanglish banger.
Arrietty proudly represented her Mexican roots with her talent show performance. She sang an original mariachi song in Spanish and brought baile folklórico to the stage. Last year, Geneva Karr also performed a bit of the traditional Mexican dance during the talent show.
Another top standout was Lucky Starzzz, who is making history as the first queen born in Cuba to compete on the U.S. franchise. While she didn’t sing have a Spanglish banger or danced baile folklórico, she did let her freak flag fly high while performing a song about “Lemonade.” Lucky Starzzz was also dressed like the sexy embodiment of a lemon and she sprayed the judges’ panel with lemonade.
With the “Rate-A-Queen” twist, Jewels Sparkles and Suzie Toot were voted the top two performances of the week. Both queens competed in a Lip-Sync for the Win to “Woman’s World” by guest judge Katy Perry. RuPaul picked Suzie Toot as the winner of the lip-sync and this week’s talent show. Next week, the other half of the cast will perform in the “Drag Queens Got Talent” show.
RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17 airs new episodes Friday nights at 8pm EST on MTV.
