Mafalda is coming to Netflix. Yes, that Mafalda. A show based on the comic strip by Quino, written and directed by Juan José Campanella, is set to premiere on the streamer in 2027. And for an entire generation that grew up with the little girl who loved world politics and hated soup, the news is very, very exciting.

Netflix Argentina shared the news with a caption that read “TOTAL excitement. This is the first image from the Mafalda animated series. Written and directed by Juan José Campanella and based on the comic strips by Quino, it arrives on Netflix in 2027.”

The image showcases Mafalda from the back, partly obscured by a wall and talking on the phone. She’s sitting by the door, with parts of the house visible as well.

Campanella is an Oscar-winning filmmaker for The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos). Mafalda is produced and animated by Campanella’s Mundoloco CGI.

The iconic comic strip by Quino ran from 1964 to 1973 and centered on Mafalda, a brilliant six-year-old girl who became famous for asking questions, everything from global politics to her parents’ everyday decisions. Often compared to Peanuts, the comic strip is known for filtering social commentary through a child’s perspective.

For the animated series, we will see Mafalfa in full color, though the original comic strip was black-and-white line art.

When the show was first announced in 2024, Campanella said, “How can we reconnect new generations that didn’t grow up with Mafalda with this great work? How can we bring her wit, her sharpness, to kids growing up on digital platforms today? How can we, finally, translate one of the greatest works in the history of graphic humor into the audiovisual language?”

In 2027, we’ll get our answer.
