Mayans M.C. is getting a fifth season. The news of the series renewal was revealed during the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday (July 24) when co-creator and executive producer Elgin James surprised at least one cast member during their conference panel.

“I keep forgetting to tell everybody – and no one here knows this – but we just got picked up for season 5,” James said.

Clayton Cardenas, who plays Angel Reyes on the show, yelled “What?!” into the microphone, jumped out of his seat a bit, and grabbed onto the arms of his co-stars JD Pardo and Danny Pino, who were sitting on opposite sides of him.

Later, when FX Entertainment released an official statement, James added: “I can’t wait to see what we’re able to create together moving forward. And every single member of the Mayans family, from our top of the call sheet to our set PAs and every single person in between, have put their blood and sweat into making Mayans something special on the set and on the screen.”

Nick Grad, President of Original Programming, said that “James and the creative team, the brilliant cast, crew, and our partners at 20th Television have kept fans coming back for more, and we are ready to take that ride with them for another season.”

Karey Burke, President of 20th Television, called James a “visionary leader” who did “the impossible task” of serving as director, showrunner, and writer on the series. “He’s also a passionate champion of emerging voices and young storytellers both in front and behind the camera, which is another reason we love being in business with him.”

Earlier this month, Pardo tweeted that he wasn’t worried about the series not getting picked up for another season when a fan asked why it was taking so long for an announcement about the future of the show. “I’m not worried,” Pardo wrote. “It’s a timing issue. Not ratings. We are top five cable scripted series. All will be a-ok!”
