Mexican ‘Wicked’ Cast Reunite at Movie’s Premiere in Mexico City

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in Wicked

Universal Pictures

A reunion of epic proportions took place at the Wicked movie premiere in Mexico City yesterday (November 11). The cast of the original Mexican production of Wicked regrouped in honor of the upcoming film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Mexican pop star Danna also met with Grande at the event.

Back in October 2013, Danna played Elphaba in the first Spanish-language production of Wicked in Mexico City. In that same production, Ceci De La Cueva played the role of Glinda. In August, Danna and De La Cueva announced that they will dub the voices of Elphaba and Glinda respectively in the Latin American version of the Wicked movie. Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation stars Grande as Glinda and Erivo as Elphaba.

For the premiere in Mexico City, the Palacio de los Deportes was transformed into the Enchanted City. Danna and De La Cueva attended the event and they reunited with their castmates from the Mexican production.

Two pop stars later collided when Danna met Grande inside the Palacio de los Deportes. She also got to meet Erivo. Likewise, De La Cueva greeted the stars of the movie as well, which meant that the two Elphabas and the two Glindas came face-to-face for the first time.

Over on the red carpet, Grande was warmly received by her fans in Mexico. In a video from the premiere, she looks pleasantly surprised to hear them shouting, “¡Ariana, hermana, ya eres Mexicana!” Erivo was also with Grande when the moment took place.

The Wicked movie will open in theaters in the U.S. on November 22 and on the 21st in Mexico.

Danna will also appear in the documentary Danna: Tenemos Que Hablar, which will start streaming on Disney+ on November 27. She will later bring her Danna L!ve Tour to the states for one night only next month. Her concert will take place at the Novo in L.A. on December 19.
