Disney+ has given viewers a behind-the-scenes sneak peek of its upcoming original series National Treasure: Edge of History, and the small-screen adventure has a big-screen feel.
The new chapter in the franchise comes after the original film, National Treasure, hit theaters in 2004, followed by the sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, in 2007. Both movies starred Nicholas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian, and amateur cryptographer. He goes on a quest to steal the Declaration of Independence, which holds the key to a hidden treasure.
In National Treasure: Edge of History, a new cast of characters is led by Jess Morales (Lisette Olivera), a 22-year-old Dreamer who is looking for answers about her family’s history. The sneak peek footage was shown on Thursday (July 21) during the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con and featured new scenes with its Latina star.
With her friends in tow, Jess “embarks on [a] Pan American treasure adventure,” which includes a rivalry with Billie Pearce (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a black-market antique dealer, and the return of computer expert Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) from the first two films. “You guys are still in this with me?” Jess asks her diverse crew.
Jess, who Olivera describes as “tenacious,” is seen doing several different things in the trailer, including researching information on a laptop, attending a black-tie event, walking through a church, inspecting an artifact, searching for clues, and hiding from the dangers that lurk around the corners.
“Everything I thought I knew about my mom, my dad is a crazy riddle that can only be solved by finding this treasure,” Jess says.
Go treasure hunting with Jess and her friends when National Treasure: Edge of History opens a new chapter to the franchise on Disney+.
