The Bad Bunny Halftime Show left everyone buzzing. The songs. The celebration of Latinidad. The guests. And though many of the people Bad Bunny brought onto the Super Bowl stage were recognizable faces, from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin to Pedro Pascal and Karol G, some were not. But that doesn’t mean they weren’t important.

Jewelianna Ramos-Ortiz, who is a world champion martial artist, appeared alongside Bad Bunny in the Super Bowl as the singer sang “El Apagón.” She appeared alongside her husband, Justin Ortiz. They were seen climbing utility poles and doing stunts as Bad Bunny sang.

Ramos-Ortiz was introduced to martial arts when she was very young, and today works as a stunt woman in the film and TV industry. Some of the projects she has worked on include movies like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Blue Beetle, and TV series like Ms. Marvel, Mayans M.C., and Cobra Kai

In fact, in her last project, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, she served as the stunt double for actress Jenna Ortega, who played Astrid Deetz. That was a big step forward in her career. But perhaps none has been as big as the one she took on Super Bowl Sunday.

“Hoy el AMOR ganó! Love always wins. Every part of this performance is made with love in mind,” Ramos-Ortiz told Remezcla about appearing besides Bad Bunny in the Halftime show. “Esta boricua de Bayamón fue la única stunt en el show y todavía no me lo creo. My inner child is screaming. I love what I do and I love that I was able to help bring Benito’s message to the world because of it. QUE VIVA EL AMOR!

As for how this happened, Ramos-Ortiz told Remezcla that the connection was made with her producing partner and friend stunt coordinator Sara Beko. She brought on Ramos-Ortiz and her husband Justin, who also played Bad Bunny’s stunt double.

“We just have built such names and reputations for ourselves in the stunt community in film and TV. And we were world champion martial artists. So I just think that body awareness, they just knew that with this project they just needed a multi-tool performer. And so they brought us on and we’re Puerto Rican so we just fit the bill.”
