While little is known about the story behind the upcoming live-action remake of the 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs starring Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), many people online over the last few months have ridiculed the idea that Disney is going to “bend over backward” to not offend anyone. Some even started calling the movie PC Snow White or Woke Snow White.

Zegler is more than OK with her modern version of the fairytale making changes to the narrative, especially the idea that Snow White is simply a princess whose main objective is to wait around for a prince to save her.

“People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is—because it needed that,” Zegler told Vanity Fair. “It’s an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond ‘Someday my prince will come.’”

Others like actor Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) called the original film “a f—ing backwards story about dwarfs.” In response, Disney said it hired consultants to ensure that the representation of dwarfs in the film wasn’t going to include any stereotypical portrayals.

“We are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,” a Disney spokesperson said in response to Dinklage’s comments. “We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, hits theaters on March 22, 2024.
