It’s a historic year for Latine talent at the 97th Annual Academy Awards, which announced a handful of Oscar nominations for Latines across several categories– a welcome rise from years past, where only a couple of Latine nominees received nominations. The excitement is palpable, and the Latine nominees were eager to share their excitement– and honor with the world. Check out their response to the nominations below!

Colman Domingo, Best Actor

Afro-Latino actor Colman Domingo is basking in the joy of being nominated for Best Actor for a second year in a row. Nominated for his role in the A24 film, Sing Sing, Domingo shared his gratitude for all the support he has received in a sentimental IG post where he’s posing next to a wall with the number 2.

He said, “2nd time around. Grateful about it all. The whole journey to make @singsingmovie No one does this alone. I have so much love and faith and human beings around me. I am in gratitude for all. To be recognized with my brothers that I admire. Made with love. Made with hope. Made for the love of art and all the healing powers that it can possess.”

Fernanda Torres, Best Actress

Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres recently made history as the first Brazilian to win a Golden Globe Award. Now the applause continues with her latest Oscar nomination for her role in the Brazilian Film, I’m Still Here. Torres shared her emotional response to the Oscar nomination in a personal video published to Instagram, where she thanks her team and the Brazilian public for their ongoing support.

Her caption read, “I thank everyone involved in I’m Still Here.” She went on to write, “To the audience who watched the film and to Brazil who supported and worked hard on social media for these nominations.”

Zoe Saldaña, Best Supporting Actress

Dominican and Puerto Rican actress Zoe Saldaña is celebrating another nomination for her role as Rita Mora Castro in the musical thriller, Emilia Pérez. After winning her first Golden Globe for the same film, Saldaña is now in the running to secure her first ever Oscar award. The actress shared her excitement in a selfie with her two sisters, Cisely Saldana and Mariel Saldana.

Her caption said, “I am truly honored and grateful for the nomination. Thank you so much for considering me for this award. I am thrilled to be among such talented company.”

Monica Barbaro, Best Supporting Actress

Monica Barbaro, who starred as Joan Baez in the biographical drama, A Complete Unknown, has received her first Oscar nomination. The actress with Mexican and Nicaraguan roots has not yet come to social media to share her reaction, however in a statement to Deadline, she says, “This was really unexpected…I was trying not to pay attention to it because there are so many phenomenal actors performances this year and I’ve just been like, I’m not going to overthink it. I’m not going to expect any of it.”

Followers have been commenting on her last (unrelated) IG post, with one of the top comments saying “GIRL WAKE UP YOURE AN OSCAR NOMINATED ACTRESS.”
