Real Women Have Curves: The Musical is hitting the Broadway stage next year. While most people are familiar with the 2002 film, which stars America Ferrera and the late Lupe Ontiveros, Curves was adapted from a 1990 stage play by Josefina López, who also co-wrote the movie.

According to Deadline, the play, which has since been adapted into a musical, will make its Broadway debut in 2025. It had its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University in 2023.

Composer and lyricist Benjamin Velez and Grammy Award-winning artist Joy Huerta, who is one half of the Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy, are behind the music and lyrics. Directing the musical and providing its choreography will be Sergio Trujillo.

Set in Summer 1987, Real Women Have Curves tells the story of 18-year-old Ana, a first-generation Mexican American teen, who dreams of going to college and starting a career in New York City. Her mother, however, has different plans for her. She wants her to stay at home and work in the family’s garment factory.

“I am thrilled to be a part of bringing Real Women Have Curves: The Musical to Broadway,” said Huerta. “Songwriting for theater is a new undertaking for me. Ana’s story is such a powerful and universal one that already holds so much cultural relevance, and we look forward to bringing it to new audiences in this musical format.”

The cast for Real Women Have Curves: The Musical has not been announced yet, but national casting for the character of Ana is currently taking place.
