A New Selena Quintanilla Documentary Is Coming in 2025 — Here’s What We Know

The legacy of Selena Quintanilla will once again be revisited. A new documentary about the late Tejano music legend will premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Next year’s Sundance Film Festival will run from Jan. 23-Feb. 2, 2025 in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. The roster of the 93 films and episodic programs that will be screened at the festival was revealed this morning.

A film about Selena, the Mexican-American star that was murdered in March 1995, will have its world premiere as part of the U.S. Documentary Competition. Mexican-American director Isabel Castro is behind the upcoming Selena y Los Dinos documentary. According to Sundance, the film about the life and legacy of Selena will include “never-before-seen footage from the family’s personal archive.” Castro also conducted interviews with people that were close to her.

Considering that Selena specials continue to recycle the footage of her that’s been out there for years, it will be nice to see her in a new light. The world got to know Selena with the biopic that starred Jennifer Lopez in 1997. In 2020, Netflix revisited her legacy with Selena: The Series, which starred Christian Serratos. Since then, projects around Selena have largely been exploitative and have even centered around her murderer, Yolanda Saldívar. Earlier this year, Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them on Oxygen featured interviews with Saldívar and her family members. Selena’s dad Abraham Quintanilla blasted the docu-series.

Selena y Los Dinos at Sundance next year should hopefully bring the focus back to Selena’s inspiring story of breaking down barriers for música mexicana and for women in the genre. Passes and packages to participate in Sundance either in-person or online are now available on the festival’s official website here. Tickets to a single film, including the Selena documentary, will go on-sale on Jan. 16, 2025.
