If seeing Tessa Thompson (Passing) sporting a power suit in the teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder didn’t make you long for the sequel, then how about Thompson wearing steel armor and sitting atop a throne? We’ll throw Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman (Black Swan) into the mix, too, to sweeten the deal.

In a new image released by Marvel, a muscular Thompson and Portman are featured sitting beside each other on two separate thrones.

With Thompson’s role in the franchise shifting from Valkyrie to King Valkyrie and Portman switching from Dr. Jane Foster to The Mighty Thor, some online fans have been speculating that they are both likely the rulers of New Asgard.

For those of you who believed that maybe Jane might continue her romance with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) after 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, don’t hold your breath. In 2017, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said Jane and Thor broke up somewhere between Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok four years later.

Director Taika Waititi recently told Empire magazine that Portman’s character in Love and Thunder is something entirely different than who she played in her last two Thor movies and couldn’t assure anyone that Jane and Thor find their way back to one another in the upcoming sequel.

“I think most people will assume that the love story is between Chris and Natalie,” Waititi said. “I can’t promise that what people think is going to happen in this film will happen.”

If Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman do end up being the king and queen of New Asgard in Thor: Love and Thunder, we’re not shying away from saying that Portman got an upgrade. Sorry, not sorry, Chris Hemsworth aka Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters July 8, 2022.
