Wagner Moura is making history. The actor has become the first Brazilian man to ever be nominated in the Lead Actor Drama category at the Golden Globes, thanks to his performance in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent.

The other actors in the category include another Latino, as they are: Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere). Isaac, however, had been nominated before, while Moura is following a recent upswing for Brazilian actors.

Just last year, Brazilian Fernanda Torres won a Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture Golden Globe for her performance in I’m Still Here. Torres also went on to be nominated for an Oscar. Her mother had also previously been nominated. Still, besides Daniel Benzali for his role in the TV series Murder One, Brazilian men had found it harder to break through, until now.

Other Latines nominated for movies this year include Tessa Thompson (Hedda), who was nominated in the Lead Category for drama, Benicio del Toro (One Battle After Another), who was nominated in the Supporting Category for drama, and Guillermo del Toro (Frankenstein), who was nominated as Best Director.

The Secret Agent was also nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Non English Language category, and Frankenstein was nominated for Best Drama.

On the TV side, Diego Luna got a nomination for Andor for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Drama. Selena Gomez got one for Only Murders in the Building for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Jenna Ortega was also nominated for Wednesday in the same category as Gomez.

The 2026 Golden Globes (83rd Annual) will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026 and will air live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
