Wagner Moura has made history as the first Brazilian man to win in the Lead Actor Drama category at the Golden Globes for his work in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent.

During his acceptance speech Moura said, “The Secret Agent is a film about memory, or the lack of memory and generational trauma. I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So, this is for the ones that are sticking with their values.”

The other actors in the category include another Latino, as they are: Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere). Isaac, however, had been nominated before, while Moura is following a recent upswing for Brazilian actors.

Just last year, Brazilian Fernanda Torres won a Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture Golden Globe for her performance in I’m Still Here. Torres also went on to be nominated for an Oscar. Her mother had also previously been nominated. Still, besides Daniel Benzali for his role in the TV series Murder One, Brazilian men had found it harder to break through, until now.

The Secret Agent was also nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Non English Language category.
