The first look at the upcoming Jenni Rivera biopic is finally here. The release date for the Jenni movie with Annie Gonzalez starring as the late Mexican-American icon was also announced.
Back in May 2023, Gonzalez, who is of Mexican descent, was cast as the lead of the movie Jenni. She will play Rivera, who was also known as “La Diva de la Banda.”
During her lifetime, Rivera broke down doors for women in música mexicana and banda music. The Latin Grammy-nominated star unexpectedly passed away on Dec. 9, 2012 in a plane crash in Mexico. Gonzalez revealed to Deadline that she went through an interview process and auditioned with Rivera’s surviving family members.
The trailer for Jenni was released on the ViX YouTube channel. Gonzalez can be heard singing Rivera’s classic “La Chacalosa” in a bar. As Rivera, she argues with her dad about trying to get her music career off the ground. Her perseverance takes her to the stage of the Staples Center in L.A. The final scene in the trailer shows Gonzalez singing “Mariposa de Barrio” in Rivera’s famous pink gown from one of final concerts. “My life ain’t no fairytale, but I was never really the princess type,” she says.

In addition to Gonzalez, the cast of Jenni includes Manuel Uriza as Pedro Rivera, Jenni’s father, Cinthya Carmona as Chiquis Rivera, her daughter, and Tatiana Alicia Beltrán as a young Jenni. The movie will start streaming on ViX on December 6. That same day, Jenni will also open in select theaters in the U.S. and Mexico.
The Jenni soundtrack will feature Rivera’s biggest hits as well as a few moments where Gonzalez sings a few of those classics herself. Though it’s been more than a decade since her passing, Rivera’s legacy continues to live on. Back in June, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
