Red, White & Royal Blue, a new LGBTQ+ rom-com coming to Prime Video, is finally letting us in on what’s to come with an official trailer. Taylor Zakhar Perez (Minx) is playing the lead role of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the first woman President of the United States. Playing opposite him as his love interest is Nicholas Galitzine (Cinderella), who plays Britain’s Prince Henry.

Perez is of Middle Eastern and Mexican descent. And Red, White & Royal Blue is based on the New York Times bestseller of the same name by Casey McQuiston. She is listed as an executive producer for the Prime Video film and has written other beloved books like One Last Stop and I Kissed Shara Wheeler. It’s also directed by Matthew López, the Tony Award-winning writer, who is openly gay and making his directorial debut with this movie.

In the official trailer, we get to see Alex and Prince and how their long-standing feud boils over in a rare in-person encounter. The dust-up between the two high-profile young people becomes tabloid fodder forcing the U.S. and British governments to set up an apology meeting between the two. What starts as a forced reconciliation quickly, and playing nice for the public, turns into a romance that develops between the two.

What’s surprising about Red, White & Royal Blue is that it’s unapologetically rated R for some sexual content that the official trailer teases. Too often we don’t get an opportunity to see intimate scenes between same-sex couples that look this soft or are just presented in the first place. And this official trailer comes at a time when LGBTQ+ shows are being canceled left, studios pass on LGBTQ+ in the first place because of the fear of backlash, and the Supreme Court in the U.S. actively works against the queer community.

Red, White & Royal Blue premieres August 11, 2023 on Prime Video.
