During Netflix’s 2022 TUDUM event, actors Tenoch Huerta (Blank Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Dianna Agron (Glee) introduced their upcoming series El Elegido (The Chosen One), which is adapted from the comic book series American Jesus by Mark Millar.

In the comic, a 12-year-old boy discovers he is the returned Jesus Christ and has the power to do things like heal people’s disabilities and raise the dead. In the preview clip, Huerta said he is excited to show viewers the talent of the entire cast and crew and share the “cultural environment” of the show, much of which is shot on location in Mexico.

In a small cut scene from filming, we see Huerta entering a room with a gun in hand. Perhaps he’s an agent or officer that becomes wrapped up in the life of Dianna Agron’s character, who seems to be the young boy’s mother.

Millar describes one of the first locations they shot the series as “the most spectacular place in Mexico…It looks like a movie set. It looks like it’s been made or CGI, but it’s real and it’s beautiful.”

He continued to describe the visuals of the series as “very interesting.” Some of the shots from the production feature what looks like a Mexican festival or carnival and include detailed costumes, paper mache masks, and papel picado decorations.

“This is very real,” Millar said. “What they’ve done is…make the environment look almost supernatural. It looks unlike any comic book adaptation I’ve seen.”

El Elegido is the same series that experienced tragedy this past summer. Two actors, Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, were killed when a van they were traveling in crashed on the way to the airport in Santa Rosalía, Baja California.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took the lives of Ray Garduño and Juan Francisco González,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement at the time. “Our thoughts are with their loved ones and with those injured during this unfortunate accident.”

Tenoch Huerta is also starring in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which releases on November 11, 2022.
