Actor Harvey Guillén knows a thing or two about monsters. In the last few years, he’s made a career out of his confrontations with creatures on film and television, especially when the horror and comedy genres are combined.

“I’ve been playing a lot in the world of vampires, witches, warlocks, and zombies,” Guillén told Remezcla during a recent interview. “I love that world. I grew up interested in the world of mermaids and wizards. It’s almost like second nature to me.”

Best known for his star turn as an aspiring vampire in the horror-comedy TV series What We Do in the Shadows, Guillén was also featured on a handful of fantasy and supernatural TV shows, including The MagiciansThe Good Place, and iZombie.

In his most recent project, the horror-comedy whodunit Werewolves Within, the Mexican-American actor plays Joaquim, a well-to-do yoga instructor. His character finds himself trapped in a snowy mountain town with a group of people, all fearing for their lives because they believe a werewolf is on the loose.

Werewolves Within is adapted from a popular, multiplayer video game of the same name. Guillén doesn’t consider himself a gamer, but he tried the arcade version, which he believes has a “moral lesson” attached to it. “When you play that kind of game in person, you’re making choices based on personal agendas and vendettas,” Guillén said. “It’s like taking justice in your own hands and making choices that benefit you, which is kind of what humans do. I think everyone can be pushed to a limit. I think everyone has a bit of a werewolf within them.”

Werewolves Within is currently playing at limited theaters and will debut on VOD on July 2.
