Created in 2014, the Premios Platino awards ceremony is widely considered the Oscars of Ibero-America and serves to amplify films, filmmakers, actors, and musicians from across Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
This year, Telemundo and Universo have signed an exclusive agreement making them the official broadcasters of the Premios Platino ceremony. This includes access to exclusive content such as interviews with nominees and red carpet coverage. This deal allows U.S. viewers to catch the show from the comfort of their homes. Previous years have aired the awards ceremony on HBO Max.
The first ever edition of the ceremony was held in Panama City on April 5th, 2014 and proved to be a hit amongst the Ibero-American film community. The second edition of the ceremony was held in July 2015, broadcast in more than 60 countries, and saw the participation of 760 films. The significantly larger attendance of numerous recognized film figures worldwide cemented its status as the premiere film award in the region.
Last year’s awards ceremony marked some notable wins including six total award wins and two audience awards for Society of the Snow (La sociedad de la nieve), which tells the true story of the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes in 1972. Cecilia Roth was the recipient of the Platino Honorary Award for her illustrious career and impact in film. She’s best known for her roles in several of Pedro Almodóvar’s films including, Pepi, Luci, Bom (1980), Labyrinth of Passion (1982), Dark Habits (1983), and All About My Mother (1999).
Previous recipients of the award include Benicio Del Toro, Diego Luna, Edward James Olmos, and Antonio Banderas.
Nominees for this year’s awards will be announced on Friday, March 14th, 2025. The ceremony will take place at the Palacio Municipal de Congresos de Madrid in Madrid, Spain, and will air live on Sunday, April 27th, 2025.
