We’re a little more than a week away before the nationwide premiere of Blue Beetle, DC Comics’ first-ever Latine-led superhero movie, and with every day that passes comes more surprises. Warner Bros. just released the first official clip of the film, and it shows fans an exciting scene where the title character finds a way to control his superpowers and use them to his advantage.

In the clip, Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is standing on the ledge of a building wearing a blue tracksuit and trying to figure out how his superpowers work. He’s holding his arms up like Superman hoping that it will trigger the Blue Beetle suit from revealing itself once again.

“Dude, no worries. Take your time,” Jenny (Bruna Marquezine) tells Jaime, who seems frustrated because it’s not working.

Jaime’s uncle Rudy (George Lopez), however, isn’t as patient. “You gotta force it to come out,” he yells at his stressed-out nephew.

Although Rudy’s comment annoys Jaime at first, it gives him an idea. “You’re a genius,” he tells his uncle as he steps back onto the roof. “You said this thing is gonna protect me, right? It’s not gonna let me die.”

Confused, Rudy and Jenny begin to understand what Jaime is about to do. “I wouldn’t test it,” Rudy says as Jaime begins running toward the edge of the building and leaps off of it. Both Rudy and Jenny scream at him not to do it, but it’s too late. Jaime is airborne. Luckily, his Blue Beetle suit activates and he blasts off into the night sky like a fiery rocket.

We can’t wait to see what else that superhero suit can do when Blue Beetle premieres in theaters on August 18, 2023.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, Blue Beetle being covered here wouldn’t exist.
