A Mexican seafood restaurant in Los Angeles recently received one of the highest accolades in the culinary industry. Holbox, opened by Chef Gilberto Cetina Jr. in 2017, was awarded with a Michelin star.

Under the Michelin Guide, one star means that Holbox provides “high-quality cooking [and is] worth a stop.” Holbox is now the first Mexican marisquería (seafood restaurant) in the country to ever earn the designation.

“We are beyond thrilled to announce that Holbox has been awarded its first Michelin Star!” the restaurant’s Instagram page read. “This incredible honor places Holbox among California’s finest dining establishments. Thank you to our dedicated team, loyal diners, and [Michelin Guide] for making this a reality.”

According to its official website, Holbox is one of the eight restaurants located inside the historic Mercado La Paloma in South Central Los Angeles. It’s named after an island in Mexico’s northern Yucatán Peninsula.

“The menu features specialties from coastal regions of Mexico, seen through the lens of its southern California and Baja California ingredients,” the website reads.

Cetina started cooking with his father at another restaurant in the Mercado called Chichen Itza. Since opening seven years ago, Holbox has earned several awards, including the 2023 Restaurant of the Year from the Los Angeles Times. Cetina was also tapped last year as a James Beard Finalist for Best Chef in California.

“A Michelin Star was never in our plans,” Cetina said. “It didn’t seem attainable for a restaurant as casual as ours, but I’m so proud of my team and grateful for all the love they pour into every task.”
