On Wednesday (June 5), the eagerly awaited list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants was revealed. The 22nd edition of the annual ranking includes restaurants across 26 territories and 5 continents, and among the list are 11 restaurants from across Latin America.
The restaurants on the list are ranked in following order:
- No.41 Mayta – Lima, Peru
- No.37 Oteque – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- No.34 Rosetta – Mexico City, Mexico
- No.33 Pujol – Mexico City, Mexico
- No.29 Boragó – Santiago, Chile
- No.27 A Casa do Porco – São Paulo, Brazil
- No.25 El Chato – Bogotá, Colombia
- No.16 Kjolle – Lima, Peru
- No.10 Don Julio – Buenos Aires, Argentina
- No.7 Quintonil – Mexico City, Mexico
- No.5 Maido – Lima, Peru
Maido, a “Japanese restaurant with a Peruvian heart” moved up to #5 on the list, and was recently ranked as the # 1 Latin American restaurant of 2023. Chef Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura opened Maido in 2019, and combines traditional Japanese techniques and Peruvian ingredients to create the esteemed Nikkei cuisine.
Don Julio, a neighborhood parrilla (steakhouse) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, also made a leap from #19 in 2023 to #10 on the list. Executive chef Guido Tassi serves up a menu around seasonal availability and local crops, with a focus on grass-fed aberdeen angus and Hereford cattle.
Brazilian restaurant, A Casa do Porco, who ranked at #27, is also celebrating another major win. Chef, Janaína Torres, won the 2024 award for Best Female Chef. The restaurant offers an array of pork dishes at an accessible price point– about $60 USD per person. Chef Torres designed the most recent menu, “Somos de Carne e Osso” (we are flesh and bone), inspired by her personal experience of triumphs and shortcomings.
