In the past year, Peso Pluma has become the new leader in corridos tumbados. Though his success appears to be overnight, the Mexican rapper and singer’s ascent to the top of the charts has been a few years in the making.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Peso Pluma’s music first started connecting with his fans through TikTok. He released his first two albums back in 2020. Throughout the year, he put out the live LPs Disco En Vivo and Disco En Vivo, Vol 2. He then followed that up with his debut album, Ah y Qué? Peso Pluma’s second studio album Efectos Secundarios followed in 2021. His breakthrough moment would arrive a year later with “El Belicon,” which dropped in February. His collaboration with Raúl Vega would establish Peso’s belicon era of corridos that has since taken the world by storm.

Following the release of  “El Belicon,” Peso Pluma’s music career has been on fire. He teamed up with corridos tumbados pioneer Natanael Cano for their fiery collaboration “PRC.” They joined forces again for the party anthem “AMG” with fellow Mexican singer Gabito Ballesteros. But Peso Pluma’s success is not limited to corridos, as he has also scored a reggaeton hit with Yng Lvcas. He features on the Mexican singer’s sensual remix of “La Bebe.”

Peso Pluma made history alongside the Mexican-American group Eslabon Armado. The band enlisted him for a feature on their love song “Ella Baila Sola,” which has climbed to No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. The collaboration became the first regional Mexican music song to crack the top 10 of the chart.

All the songs mentioned above have inspired various TikTok trends. In honor of Peso Pluma’s new reign in corridos, here are six songs by him to check out.

Yng Lvcas & Peso Pluma - “La Bebe” (Remix)

Though he is known for making corridos, Peso Pluma also has a reggaeton hit to his name. He features on the remix of Mexican rapper Yng Lvcas’ song “La Bebe.” Yng Lvcas first released the song by himself in 2021. Two years later, it is charting on the Billboard Hot 100 chart thanks to Peso’s influence. He taps the sensual side of his raspy voice in the reggaeton romp. Yng Lvcas compliments Peso Pluma well with his alluring performance. It’s become one of the biggest reggaeton hits by two Mexican artists. The song has helped Yng Lvcas’ 2021 mixtape LPM experience a resurgence on the charts.

Becky G & Peso Pluma - “Chanel”

Becky G tapped into the power of Peso Pluma for the first taste of her upcoming regional Mexican music album. In April, the Mexican-American pop star teamed up with Peso for “Chanel,” the lead single from said LP. For the first time, Becky G experiments with the trap corridos sound. In the emotional song, Becky G and Peso Pluma trade verses about a relationship that has run its course. Becky G performed the song for the first time at Coachella and invited Peso Pluma as a special guest during weekend one. They later performed the song again with great chemistry at the 2023 Latin American Music Awards in Las Vegas, NV.

Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma - “Ella Baila Sola”

The biggest hit of Peso Pluma’s career is his song with Eslabon Armado. The Mexican-American group teamed up with him for the emo love song “Ella Baila Sola.” Eslabon Armado’s sad sierreño sound was perfectly blended with Peso’s trap corrido edge. The band’s lead singer, Pedro Tovar, and Peso trade verses about a woman on the dance floor that has caught their full attention. Last month, both acts made history with the first regional Mexican music song to crack the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song helped push Eslabon Armado’s album Desvelado to a historic No. 6 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.

Fuerza Regida & Peso Pluma - “Igualito A Mi Apa”

Another force in regional Mexican music right now is Fuerza Regida. The Mexican-American group teamed up with Peso Pluma for the song “Igualito A Mi Apá.” Fuerza Regida blended elements of banda music with Peso Pluma’s trap corridos sound. In the feel-good banger, the band’s lead singer, Jesús Ortiz Paz, and Peso Pluma trade verses about carrying on their fathers’ legacies while living their best lives. The song was included on Fuerza Regida’s album Pa Que Hablen, currently charting on the Billboard 200 chart. The LP came out alongside the band’s other album Sigan Hablando, which both dropped in December 2022.

Peso Pluma & Nicki Nicole - “Por Las Noches” (Remix)

Among Peso Pluma’s current string of hits, the most underrated song is “Por Las Noches.” He first released the song by himself in 2021. Thanks to a remix, the heartbreaking song about missing an ex got a second wind this year. Peso teamed up with Argentine singer Nicki Nicole, who beautifully compliments his raspy voice with the feminine touch she gives the collaboration. For that song being her first corrido, Nicki sounds great, embracing the genre. Peso Pluma also gets to show an emotional side to his belicon sound. “Por Las Noches” is currently charting on the Billboard Hot 100, and it deserves to be higher up with his other hits.

Peso Pluma & Eladio Carrión - “77”

Peso Pluma recently teased in his Instagram stories that he is working on his new album. While putting corridos in the global spotlight, he is also pushing the sound to the next level with his genre-bending collaborations. First, he teamed up with Colombian reggaetonero Blessd for their song “Las Morras.” Then, he joined forces with Puerto Rican rapper Eladio Carrión for his most explosive banger yet, “77.” Carrión, a force in the Latine trap scene, sounds at home in Peso Pluma’s trap corrido soundscape. In the fiery collaboration, Peso and Carrión trade verses about living the high life after hustling to get to the top. Peso Pluma’s next album is one of the most highly anticipated of the year.
