Bad Bunny just made history at the 2026 Grammy Awards. The Puerto Rican artist became the first artist to win in the Album of the Year category with a Spanish-language LP.
Throughout his career, Bad Bunny has continued to break down the language barriers that long existed in the general categories at the Grammys. In 2023, he made history with the first Spanish-language LP to be nominated for Album of the Year. Un Verano Sin Ti ended up losing that year to Harry Styles’ Harry’s House. Bad Bunny returned to the Grammys with a vengeance this year: He became the first Latin music artist to be nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year in a single night.
Though Song of the Year went to Billie Eilish’s “Wildflower” and Record of the Year went to Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther,” Bad Bunny won the night’s top prize. DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS faced stiff competition in the Album of the Year category from Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator, Clipse, Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, Leon Thomas, and Justin Bieber. In a strange twist of fate, Styles ended up presenting the award to Bad Bunny. The “DtMF” hit-maker was crying tears of joy while walking to the podium.
To make this historic moment for Latin music even more special, Bad Bunny decided to say a majority of his speech in Spanish.
“Puerto Rico, believe me when I tell you we are much bigger than [this],” Bad Bunny said in Spanish. “There’s nothing we can’t achieve. Thank you to God, thank you to the Academy, and thank you to all those who have believed in me my entire career, all of the people who have worked on this album. Thank you, mami, for giving birth to me in Puerto Rico. I love you.”
Then he shifted briefly to English to say: “I want to dedicate this award to all the people that had to leave their homeland, their country to follow their dreams.”
For the conclusion of his speech, Bad Bunny then slipped back into Spanish. “For all the people who have lost someone close to them and had to move forward with lots of strength, this award is for you,” he said. “Thanks for all the love. I love you. To all of the Latinos of the world and all the artists that came before me and deserved to be on this stage, holding this award, thank you so much.”
Earlier in the night, Bad Bunny also won the awards for Best Global Musical Performance and Best Música Urbana Album. He took a moment to condemn ICE during his speech for the latter award.
