On July 26, U.S. ex-President Barack Obama shared his highly-anticipated annual summer playlist. This year’s musical selections include the global superstar Bad Bunny, Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía, and Mexican-American artist Omar Apollo.
“Every year, I get excited to share my summer playlist because I learn about so many new artists from your replies—it’s an example of how music really can bring us all together,” he wrote on his Twitter account. “Here’s what I’ve been listening to this summer. What songs would you add?”
Out of the 44-track summer playlist, only three Spanish-language singers have Obama vibing. The selection is so anticipated that, at the time of publishing, the playlist already had over 35 thousand likes on Twitter and over 139 thousand likes on Instagram.
“Chica, ¿qué dices?” The first Spanish-language song listed on the playlist is Rosalía’s catchy single “SAOKO” from her latest album MOTOMAMI. This isn’t the first time, though. She was on Obama’s summer playlist in 2019 with “Con Altura.”
Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti also made the former President’s playlist. His collaboration, “Ojitos Lindos,” with the Colombian group Bomba Estéreo is one of the songs highlighted on the first page. With Benito’s streaming domination, it’s no surprise that Obama caught wind of this album’s magnitude. But we know that Obama’s been listening to El Conejo Malo since 2018, when he highlighted Cardi B’s “I Like It.”
Last but not least, Omar’s The Neptunes-produced song “Tamagotchi” also made the cut. “Tamagotchi” is part of his debut album Ivory, released earlier this year.
Fans are thrilled to see some of their favorite artists from our communities on Obama’s playlist. A Twitter user said: “Obama listening to Bad Bunny I KNOW THATS RIGHT.”
What a day for these three artists! Earlier today (July 26), the MTV VMA’s revealed this year’s nominations. Coincidentally, the same three were part of this year’s nominations.
