On the heels of her Twitter showdown with conservative pundit Tomi Lahren, Cardi B has taken the time to respond to another attack from a Trump-supporting media personality. Daily Caller writer Stephanie Hamill took to social media to express her confusion over Cardi and City Girls’ music video for new single “Twerk”. In the clip, the women display excellent physical conditioning while dancing in wild animal body paint.
“In the Era of #meToo how exactly does this empower women?” Hamill, a Fox News host and Daily Caller video columnist asked before she called upon “leftists” and Cardi B herself to provide answers.
Cardi took the bait, responding, “It says to women that I can wear and not wear what ever I want. do w.e I want and that NO still means NO. So Stephanie chime in..If I twerk and be half naked does that mean I deserve to get raped and molested?”
Hamill’s demand for feminist credentials from the artists in “Twerk” is a curious one. The video’s action takes place in a man-free milieu, with Cardi calling the shots at a twerk contest populated entirely by intensely athletic dancers. (Contestants were convened by City Girls, and were competing for an IRL $25,000 prize.) The checkerboard-clad contest winner hardly performs seduction for the male gaze, getting down and dirty to vanquish the opposition, managing to light a joint while twerking upside-down, and ultimately accepting her accolades covered in dust from the contest floor.
Later, Cardi clarified that despite her recent back and forths with conservative figures, she doesn’t subscribe to any binary model of political change. “All these conservatives been harassing me and telling me the most disgusting things these past few days,” she tweeted. “Listen I’m not telling ya to turn liberal all I’m saying is to admit that your president is fuckin up this country right now! Liberal or conservative we ALL suffer as citizens.”
