Here’s How That Carla Morrison and Macklemore Collaboration Came to Be

This year, Macklemorrison became a thing after Mexican indie pop darling Carla Morrison jumped on (and elevated) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Train – the penultimate song off the duo’s second studio album, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made. If this WTF collaboration came as a surprise to you, then you’re not alone.

In an interview with Variety Latino, Morrison explains their first meeting literally happened overnight. “I was at home and realized Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were following me on social media, which seemed strange to me,” she said. “I didn’t expect that. Two hours later, my manager calls me and says, ‘Macklemore and Ryan Lewis want to fly you out.’ It was from one moment to the next, it was like ‘we fly out tomorrow.’”

Morrison didn’t even know the song when she met with the controversial hip-hop duo, whom she worked with for more than three hours and described as having good vibes.

And though we’d argue that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were blessed to work with her, Carla humbly asked why they reached out to her. They told her something along the lines of: “We heard [Amor Supremo] and even though we don’t understand what you are saying, your music projects a feeling of peace, and that’s why we wanted you to come.” That actually makes a lot of sense.
