Mexican-American singer Cuco is dialing back to oldies for his latest single “Piel Canela.” He covers the classic song by Puerto Rican legend Bobby Capó.

“Piel Canela” is Cuco’s first taste of new music this year since the release of his 2019 debut album Para Mi. The song was famously written and recorded by Capó, who is the grandfather of “Calma” hit-maker Pedro Capó. Other iconic singers have previously covered the song include Nat King Cole, Linda Ronstadt, and Celia Cruz.

Cuco gives the beloved bolero a Latin trap twist. His signature stoner croon finds it footing with Capó’s romantic lyrics. “Piel Canela” sounds as fresh as ever with Cuco’s cool update.

“Piel Canela” is also notably Cuco’s first release since allegations arose earlier this year of past inappropriate behavior with minors. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Cuco addressed the allegations back in June.

“My mistakes are my mistakes,” Cuco wrote while acknowledging that communicating with anyone underage after he turned 18-years-old was inappropriate. In that same statement, he also went on to deny “any lewd behavior with these individuals.”
