El Alfa is grieving from a tragic loss in his family. Yesterday (Jan. 7), the Dominican superstar announced the passing of his grandmother. He also revealed his plans to retire later this year.
El Alfa shared the news of his grandmother’s passing in a heartfelt post on Instagram. A carousel of images shows the dembow pioneer as a child with Ramonita. In other photos, she can be seen supporting his music career. There’s also a video included of her funeral. Ramonita passed away on Jan. 3.
“I know that life goes on, but my feelings do not go unnoticed,” he wrote. “My grandmother taught me to love God above all things, so I will mourn in her memory. Her happiness was to see me succeed, but I can’t even stay awake.”
While in mourning, El Alfa added that he will take a break from social media. Wishing to have spent more time with his grandmother while she was alive, he also revealed his intentions to retire from music on Dec. 18.

“I say goodbye momentarily to my audience that loves me,” El Alfa added. “I’ll be back soon, goodbye Instagram. I could have spent more time with her but my work didn’t allow it. The days of my retirement are getting shorter. ON DECEMBER 18TH OF THIS YEAR I WILL NEVER SING AGAIN… rest in peace grandma. I LOVE YOU.”
Many Latine artists expressed their condolences and showed support for the Dominican singer in the comments of the post. Puerto Rican singer Tito “El Bambino” wrote, “I love you. I’m here for you champion.” With the praying hands emoji, Mexican star Alejandro Fernández wrote, “Stay strong champion.” Fellow Dominican artist La Materialista added, “Treasure those beautiful memories in your heart.”
In 2021, El Alfa made history as the first dembow artist to sell out a headlining concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Last year, he embarked on his El Mejor Del Planeta Tour.
