FIDEL NADAL –

“INTERNATIONAL LOVE

(TOY SELECTAH

KWAITO MEXMORE REMIX)”

Monterrey DJ Toy Selectah (above) is playing with the kwaito rhythm of South Africa in this remezcla world premiere remix of Argentinean reggae artist Fidel Nadal. Like kudduro, baile funk or reggaeton, kwaito is very popular in urban culture. Fidel, lead singer of legendary bands Todos Tus Muertos, and Toy’s longtime friend, introduced him to Pablo Lescano of Damas Gratis (see next download). Toy tells us he wanted to push the traditional roots sound of Fidel into something “more modern and closer to what is happening with Caribbean and African rhythms that are playing in clubs, what is starting to be known as Global Ghetto Tech.” Even though he’s known as an ambassador for modern cumbia, this is not the first time Toy remixes an artist from Argentina…all very different from each other. A few weeks ago we gave out his rendition of Bababsonico’s Microdancing, he’s also worked with pop group Miranda!, and Gustavo Cerati. How does he get away with such eclectic collaborations? Toy says he has a “diplomat passport” of sorts even though Argentina is known for being purist when it comes to music, “since I’m a foreigner and have had friendships of years, I can go in and out of genres and movements with my diplomatic passport.”

LOS FABULOSOS CADILLACS F. PABLO LESCANO –

“PADRE NUESTRO”

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs never really left, the ska rock band from Argentina is back in full force after a 7-year hiatus, and back for an encore reunion tour this year. The break did them good, they might be middle-aged now, but during their April US tour, they rocked harder than ever, played all the fan favorites, and are more family-oriented too: Puerto Rican singer Mimi Maura (wife of sax player Sergio Rotman) filled in for Celia Cruz in “Vasos Vacios” (she was amazing!), and some of los Fabulosos tween sons went onstage to play their dads’ instruments at the end. Ah, que cute!

This new version of “Padre Nuestro” (included in La Luz del Ritmo, released earlier this year), features cumbia maestro Pablo Lescano (pictured above with Fabulosos frontman Vicentico during a Buenos Aires concert last year). Look for another album, El Arte de la Elegancia,  all brand new tracks, out in November.

ALEX CUBA –  “AGUA DEL POZO”

Forget about Timbaland, this cubano with the ’fro is Nelly Furtado’s new secret weapon. Alex Cuba co-wrote several tracks on Nelly’s first Spanish album, Mi Plan, out today (and is featured on the song with the same name.) Here, we give you “Agua del Pozo”, from Alex’s second album, also Agua del Pozo.

Previously only available digitally, Alex is releasing Agua del Pozo on CD, next week, on September 22nd, on his own Caracol Records. (He won a Juno award in Canada last year for this album.)

Originally from Artemisa, Cuba, where he had a band with twin brother Adonis, Alex has been living in Canada for 13 years and has found success in the world music circuit for the past few years. A new album is slated for 2010 but for now enjoy him on tour!

Upcoming Shows:

Oct 2 – Los Angeles: The Mint
Oct 3- Oakland: The New Parish
Oct 7 – Chicago: Rumba
Oct 10 – New York City: Highline Ballroom

LEON POLAR –

“SIN CARGO DE CONCIENCIA”

Leonel Garcia, half of pop super duo Sin Bandera, is leaving behind melodramatic ballads in favor of folksy, jazzy personal tunes in this solo album under the alias Leon Polar. The Mexican artist named the album L.P., and was influenced by the likes of Jorge Drexler, Paolo Nuttini, Regina Spektor, etc.

He might be indie now, with gigs at SXSW and LAMC, but Leonel mantains his trademark high-pitched voice and melancholy just like in his previous group. We do not understand why Sin Bandera fans are so angry at Leonel for going solo (see forums and comments on iTunes), its the same style, just with more acoustic guitars.
